Preparing for a Multiple Mini Interview

A Multiple Mini Interview uses several short encounters to learn about an applicant’s communication, reasoning, and other qualities. The station types and timing depend on the school.

Learn Your Interview Format

Read the invitation and school guidance for timing, delivery method, permitted materials, and confidentiality rules. The AAMC overview of MMIs explains the general approach. Do not assume every station follows one fixed script.

Practice Understanding the Prompt

Identify your role, the question, and the information you have. Distinguish facts from assumptions and explain what else you would need to know. Respect the limits of a student or observer role in clinical scenarios.

Explain Your Reasoning

Consider the people affected and relevant responsibilities. Show how you reached your view and acknowledge uncertainty where it matters. Avoid pretending that every scenario has either one memorized answer or no meaningful limits on acceptable action.

Listen During Interactive Stations

Respond to what the other person actually says. Ask appropriate clarifying questions and communicate respectfully. A role-play is an interaction, so leave space for the other participant instead of delivering a prepared monologue.

Use Practice and Feedback

Use publicly available practice material and time exercises to resemble the format you were given. Ask for feedback on clarity, listening, and reasoning. Do not seek or share confidential questions from an actual interview.

Prepare the Practical Details

Check technology, travel, timing, and any accommodations process in advance. Follow the school’s directions on attire and materials. After a station, refocus on the next encounter rather than trying to predict the final decision.
