For typical computer science graduate admissions clients, we suggest applying to at least seven to ten programs (divided between safety, mid-range, and reach programs) to maximize the chances of gaining admission. Given the highly competitive nature of top CS PhD programs at MIT, Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, and UC Berkeley (often with acceptance rates below 10%), we recommend a strategic mix that includes top-tier, mid-tier, and safety programs appropriate for your research interests and career goals.

To maximize the chances of gaining admission to competitive top-ranked CS programs, we strongly suggest applying to at least ten to fifteen programs. This is especially important for PhD applicants targeting the Big Four (MIT, Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, Berkeley) and other top-10 programs, where acceptance rates are among the lowest of any graduate program.

*** Our experience shows that without a waitlist appeal letter or letter of continued interest, the applicant has a 12% chance of getting off a waitlist at a competitive school. With a good waitlist appeal letter and waitlist campaign, that moves up to 45%. A waitlist campaign involves contacting the school on multiple occasions every few months to remind them of clients’ accomplishments and continued interest.
