Researching Psychiatry Residency Programs as an International Graduate

An international medical graduate’s psychiatry program list should begin with current eligibility and program policies. A historical label such as IMG-friendly does not establish that you qualify.

Confirm Your Pathway

Review current certification, examination, and credential requirements for the country where you want to train. For U.S. training, start with ECFMG guidance and each program’s criteria.

Check Program-Specific Policies

Confirm graduation-year rules, prior training, examinations, clinical-experience expectations, and visa sponsorship where relevant. A program’s previous residents do not establish its current policy.

Evaluate Published Outcomes

Use dated, clearly defined program information and NRMP reports. Ask which applicant group and denominator a percentage describes. Avoid relying on an old list of institutions or unexplained acceptance figures.

Explain Your Interest in Psychiatry

Use appropriate clinical experience to discuss your understanding of the specialty, communication, teamwork, and learning. Protect confidentiality and make your own contribution clear.

Compare Training and Support

Research supervision, curriculum, clinical settings, resident support, location, and practical costs. Track confirmed requirements and unanswered questions in a working list.
