Post-Baccalaureate Premedical Programs : (Post-Bacc Premedical) The Advantages and Disadvantages

Post-Bacc Premedical Programs: Advantages

Post-baccalaureate premedical programs will allow you to finish some prerequisite science courses and improve your GPA. It could also open doors to some extracurricular experiences you did not partake in, such as volunteering in a hospital. You can enroll for the program formally at a university through an application or informally by enrolling for some courses through the extension program of a university. In addition, this type of program will give you the opportunity to build a strong relationship with your professors and obtain recommendation letters in the process.

 Post-Bacc Premedical Programs: The Disadvantage

Post-baccalaureate premedical programs are not that difficult to enroll in and are less competitive compared to undergrad prerequisite courses. The implication of this is that even if you have a high grade, it won’t be taken that seriously compared to your grades as an undergraduate. Also, their tuition may be very high, which will ultimately increase your student loan even before you enter medical school.

The students who should enroll in Post-Bacc Premedical programs are those who have lower GPA than what the majority of DO and MD schools (or even schools they want to attend) will accept. There is no need to enroll in this program if your GPA is enough to be admitted into the medical school you prefer.
