For typical psychology and counseling graduate admissions clients, we suggest applying to at least seven to ten programs (divided between safety, mid-range, and reach programs) to maximize the chances of gaining admission. Given the highly competitive nature of APA-accredited clinical and counseling psychology PhD programs (often with acceptance rates of 2-8%), we recommend a strategic mix that includes both doctoral and potentially masters programs if appropriate for your career goals.

To maximize the chances of gaining admission to competitive APA-accredited psychology programs, we strongly suggest applying to at least ten to fifteen programs. This is especially important for clinical psychology PhD applicants, where acceptance rates are among the lowest of any graduate program.

*** Our experience shows that without a waitlist appeal letter or letter of continued interest, the applicant has a 12% chance of getting off a waitlist at a competitive school. With a good waitlist appeal letter and waitlist campaign, that moves up to 45%. A waitlist campaign involves contacting the school on multiple occasions every few months to remind them of clients’ accomplishments and continued interest.
