Clinical rotations are supervised learning experiences. They help medical students develop clinical understanding, work with care teams, and explore specialties within the responsibilities their program permits.
Understand the Expectations
Before a rotation, review learning objectives, schedules, assessment criteria, and required preparation. Clarify who supervises you and what tasks you may perform. Ask for help whenever a situation exceeds your role or competence.
Be Reliable and Respectful
Arrive prepared, follow team communication practices, and complete assigned work accurately. Treat patients and colleagues respectfully. Protect confidential information and follow the institution’s documentation and access policies.
Seek Feedback and Act on It
Ask your supervisor how you are progressing and what you should improve. Choose specific learning goals and revisit them as the rotation continues. Reflection is most useful when it leads to a change in preparation or behavior.
Explore a Specialty Thoughtfully
Observe the work, learning environment, and range of responsibilities. Speak with trainees and faculty about questions that published information cannot answer. One setting offers useful experience without representing every program in a specialty.
Plan Visiting Electives Carefully
If considering an away rotation, confirm eligibility, home-school approval, dates, costs, and host requirements. The AAMC VSLO program supports opportunities at participating institutions; it does not replace each institution’s rules or guarantee placement.
Describe Your Learning Honestly
Keep private notes about your development without recording identifiable patient information. When writing applications, distinguish your contribution from the team’s work. Request a reference only through an appropriate process and from someone who observed your performance.
