Residency applications require coordinated planning across eligibility, application services, program requirements, interviews, and matching. Start with the country and pathway you intend to pursue.
Separate Applications from Matching
For participating U.S. programs, an application service such as ERAS transmits materials, while the NRMP Main Residency Match is a separate matching process. Not every specialty or program uses the same systems. Confirm the actual application and matching services for your programs.
Verify Your Eligibility
Check program requirements, licensing-related conditions, examinations, and deadlines. International medical graduates seeking U.S. training should consult current ECFMG requirements and each program’s policies, including any visa sponsorship rules.
Understand the Canadian Pathway
For Canadian training, review CaRMS eligibility by applicant group, province, and program. Exam and assessment requirements can include the National Assessment Collaboration examination. Do not assume that U.S. eligibility or a particular citizenship category automatically makes every Canadian program available.
Coordinate Supporting Materials
Track transcripts, performance records, references, exam reports, written materials, and any program-specific documents. Use each system’s current instructions and allow time for third-party processing. Monitor completion rather than relying only on a submission receipt.
Prepare for Interviews and Ranking
Practice explaining your experience, specialty choice, learning needs, and program fit. Follow communication rules and rank according to the matching system’s instructions. Keep contingency plans informed by official guidance; no advisor can promise a Match result.
