Canadian Medical Schools Applications

Canadian medical schools set their own admissions requirements and applicant categories. A rule used by one faculty, province, or U.S. application service should not be assumed to apply across Canada.

Start with the AFMC Guide

Use the AFMC admissions guide to compare faculties, then verify details on each school’s website. Check the relevant entry year and whether the information applies to your applicant category.

Confirm Residency and Academic Eligibility

Review citizenship or residency categories, prior-study requirements, prerequisite courses, language requirements, and the school’s GPA calculation. Some programs distinguish between provincial and other applicants. Do not assume a universal credit count, degree length, or GPA threshold.

Check Tests Individually

MCAT and other assessment policies vary. Determine whether a test is required, which sections or results are considered, and how long a result remains valid. Confirm language and assessment requirements even when the MCAT is not required.

Use the Correct Application System and Calendar

Identify the application process used by the school or province. Record actual deadlines for forms, transcripts, references, tests, and supporting documents. Do not import AMCAS dates or a U.S. Early Decision schedule into a Canadian application.

Prepare School-Specific Materials

Explain your experiences and interests in the format each faculty requests. Choose references who know your work, document activities carefully, and prepare for the published interview process. Review costs and eligibility for financial support before applying.
