A medical fellowship provides physicians with advanced training beyond a core residency. The appropriate pathway depends on the subspecialty, prior training, location, and individual program.
Verify Your Eligibility
Review the program’s prerequisite residency training, examination requirements, licensing conditions, and any visa policy. For accredited U.S. training, consult the relevant specialty requirements and the ACGME Common Program Requirements. Do not assume one program’s eligibility rules apply everywhere.
Understand the Training Role
Fellowship develops subspecialty competence through supervised learning and increasing responsibility. Completion does not by itself settle licensing, credentialing, or board-certification requirements. Check those separately for the role and jurisdiction you intend to pursue.
Compare Programs Thoughtfully
Assess clinical exposure, supervision, curriculum, research opportunities, feedback, and practical support. Ask how these features align with the skills you want to develop. Read published requirements before requesting clarification.
Prepare a Coherent Application
Use accurate accounts of clinical learning, scholarship, teamwork, and professional development. Choose references who observed relevant work and meet the program’s author requirements. Keep statements, experience entries, and records consistent.
Coordinate Applications and Matching
Confirm whether each program uses ERAS or another application route and whether a separate match registration is required. Track the correct recruitment cycle, document deadlines, interviews, and ranking deadlines. Admission is a selection process, and no application service can guarantee a position.
