Writing a Medical School Letter of Intent

A letter of intent communicates a genuine commitment to one medical school when the school welcomes that communication. It should reflect a decision you have actually made.

Read the School’s Policy

Check whether the school accepts letters of intent, updates, or continued-interest messages, and when and how it accepts them. Respect restrictions rather than assuming an additional letter will help.

Distinguish Intent from Interest

Reserve a promise to enroll for the school you truly intend to attend if admitted. You may express interest in more than one school without falsely telling each that it is your sole first choice. Consider any existing commitments and relevant application policies.

Explain the Fit

Connect verified features of the school with your goals and experience. Refer to what you learned through research or an interview, and avoid generic praise or claims about people you have not met.

Include Useful, Accurate Updates

If allowed, briefly describe a relevant development since applying. Do not inflate a role, publication status, or achievement. Keep the message focused rather than repeating your full application.

Review the Commitment and the Writing

Check that every factual statement and expression of intent is true. Proofread names and details, follow the requested format, and keep a copy. A letter cannot guarantee an offer or replace the school’s decision process.
