Researching Medical School Pathways Without the MCAT

Some medical-school pathways do not require the MCAT, but their eligibility and continuation conditions differ. Check the exact pathway and current institutional policy rather than treating an exception as a waiver for every applicant.

Examples of Specific Pathways

Brown’s Program in Liberal Medical Education

Brown’s PLME combines undergraduate and medical education. Its official FAQ says enrolled PLME students do not need the MCAT to matriculate into the medical school, but must maintain the program’s academic and professionalism standards. This is not a waiver for every applicant to Brown’s medical school.

Icahn’s FlexMed Program

Mount Sinai’s FlexMed early-assurance pathway exempts accepted students from the MCAT. It has specific college-year, citizenship or residency, academic, and coursework requirements. Accepted students may not take the MCAT while remaining in FlexMed; applying through the traditional route requires withdrawing that acceptance.

LECOM’s Academic Index Score

LECOM’s entrance requirements describe possible use of an Academic Index Score based on GPA and SAT or ACT results in lieu of MCAT scores. Confirm how this option applies to your pathway and record directly with LECOM; it is not an automatic admission guarantee.

McGill’s Medical Program

McGill’s current policy states that MCAT scores are not required or considered. Applicants must still satisfy its academic, language, residency-category, and other admission requirements.

Check Your Own Eligibility

Read the linked official program guidance for entry stage, citizenship or residency, coursework, academic standards, and deadlines. Consider whether the educational pathway fits your goals. An MCAT exception does not guarantee admission.

Compare Your Options

Review the full school list and practical commitments before choosing a route. If considering a retake, use current AAMC guidance and each school’s score policy. Discuss your preparation with an adviser rather than assuming one strategy suits every applicant.
