Writing a Thoughtful Post-Interview Thank-You Note

A brief thank-you note can acknowledge an interviewer’s time when the school permits follow-up communication. It should be accurate, courteous, and proportionate.

Check the Communication Policy

Some schools or interview processes discourage individual follow-up. Follow those instructions first. Use only the contact channel the school or interviewer has provided for that purpose.

Choose an Appropriate Time

If a note is welcome, send it reasonably promptly after you have time to reflect and proofread. Do not treat an arbitrary number of hours as an admissions requirement. Avoid sending while upset or rushing to correct a minor impression.

Keep the Content Specific and Brief

Thank the person, mention one genuine topic from the conversation, and close courteously. Use their stated name or form of address. Do not ask for an admissions prediction or repeat the entire application.

Adapt a Simple Structure

An illustrative template is: Dear [preferred name], Thank you for speaking with me on [date]. I appreciated learning about [specific topic]. Our discussion helped me understand [accurate takeaway]. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, [your name]. Replace every placeholder with truthful details before sending.

Review Before Sending

Check the recipient, school name, spelling, and tone. A thank-you note is a courtesy, not a guarantee of admission. Follow any separate instructions for updates or letters of continued interest.
