How to Get Into Nursing School: An Application Planning Guide

Nursing schools offer different educational pathways and use different selection criteria. Start by identifying the qualification you need and the programs that fit your existing education and goals.

Choose the Right Pathway

Compare the program’s credential, entry requirements, accreditation, clinical placements, and eligibility for the relevant nursing license. Do not assume traditional, accelerated, and graduate-entry programs have the same prerequisites.

Check Courses and Entrance Tests

Review required courses, acceptable grades, course recency, and any admission test. Some programs require TEAS, HESI A2, or another assessment; others do not. Use each school’s instructions to select the correct version, date, and preparation materials.

Evaluate Experience Requirements

Patient-care exposure may help you understand the profession, but CNA certification or employment is not a universal admission requirement. Check the program’s policy before paying for a credential solely to improve your application.

Prepare a Complete Application

Track transcripts, references, essays, test reports if required, and school-specific documents. Explain your interest in nursing with accurate examples from work, study, volunteering, or other relevant experiences. Review the application for consistency and completeness.

Consider Cost and Clinical Commitments

Ask about the full program cost, clinical schedule, travel expectations, and support services. Compare financial aid offers and scheduling requirements with your circumstances. Confirm outcomes through the program and the appropriate regulator.

Understand the NCLEX-RN

Applicants for RN licensure must meet their regulator’s requirements, including the NCLEX-RN where applicable. The 2026 test plan provides for 85 to 150 items within five hours. Use the official NCSBN plan and licensing instructions when preparing.
