How to Get Into PA School: An Application Planning Guide

A strong PA application combines academic preparation, relevant experience, and a clear reason for pursuing the profession. Start with the requirements of the programs that fit your goals.

Start with Individual Program Requirements

Use the CASPA Program Directory to explore participating programs, then confirm details on each school’s website. Programs outside CASPA may use another application process. Required education, courses, grades, tests, and experience differ.

Check the Testing Policy

A PA application does not automatically require the GRE. Check whether each program requires a test, accepts alternatives, grants a waiver, or does not use scores. If a test is required, confirm its validity period and reporting deadline before registering.

Classify Experience by Your Duties

Follow CASPA’s experience definitions and the school’s own policy. Job titles alone do not determine whether work satisfies a patient-care prerequisite. Scribing, shadowing, research, volunteering, and administrative work can belong in different categories. Ask the program about any uncertain role.

Keep Accurate Records

Record the dates, actual hours, duties, and supervisor for each experience. Do not double-count time or assume that volunteer and paid hours are treated identically. Explain the contribution and learning from each role without overstating clinical responsibility.

Coordinate Materials and Deadlines

Track prerequisites, transcripts, references, essays, test results if required, and supplemental materials. Check whether the deadline requires the application to be submitted, complete, or verified. Build in time for processing and monitor missing items.

Prepare for the Interview

Be ready to explain your understanding of PA practice, what you learned from experience, and why the program fits your goals. Use accurate examples that protect patient confidentiality. Follow the school’s current interview format and instructions.
