CASPA Recommendations: Choosing and Preparing Evaluators

Recommendations should provide firsthand evidence of your preparation for PA training. Start with CASPA’s instructions and the requirements of each program.

Check the Number and Type

CASPA requires applicants to request at least two evaluations and allows up to five. Programs can set their own number and evaluator-role requirements. The platform minimum does not establish that you meet every program’s policy.

Choose People Who Know Your Work

Look for evaluators who can discuss your academic preparation, professional conduct, or relevant experience with specific examples. Check whether the program requires a particular relationship, such as an instructor or clinical supervisor.

Ask Early and Supply Accurate Context

Explain your plans and deadlines, and provide a current resume and a factual summary of work the evaluator observed. Ask whether they can provide a strong evaluation. Avoid pressuring someone who cannot assess your preparation.

Respect the Submission Process

Evaluators complete and submit their own evaluations through the designated system. Follow CASPA’s rules and any additional program instructions. Monitor request status and follow up courteously before deadlines.

Review the Whole Application

Ensure references, experiences, and essays describe a consistent and accurate record. Resolve missing components promptly. Do not assume an application is complete merely because you have paid or submitted the main form.
