Writing an MBA Essay About Perspective and Contribution

Some MBA prompts ask about background, perspective, community, or contribution. Respond to the school’s current wording rather than assuming every application requires a separate diversity essay.

Read the Purpose of the Prompt

Identify whether the question asks about your experiences, a community you value, work with others, or a future contribution. Check the limit and whether the response is required or optional.

Choose Your Own Material

Consider experiences that shaped how you think, learn, collaborate, or understand responsibility. Do not invent hardship or assume a demographic identity requires one particular story.

Explain Actions and Learning

Give enough context to understand the experience, then describe what you did and learned. Avoid broad claims about an entire group or unsupported assumptions about other people’s opportunities.

Connect with the Program Where Relevant

If asked about contribution, explain a realistic connection between your experience and the learning community. Verify any program feature you name and avoid promising involvement you have not considered.

Check the account with your records and protect others’ privacy. Follow the school’s assistance policies. A thoughtful essay adds perspective to an application; it does not guarantee a result.
