Discussing Health Policy in a Medical School Interview

A policy question can invite you to explain a problem, consider competing priorities, and reason through possible responses. Preparation should develop understanding rather than a memorized position.

Use Reliable Current Sources

Read official public-health information, policy documents, and credible research relevant to the question. Distinguish a proposal from an enacted policy, and identify the jurisdiction and time period.

Clarify the Problem

Explain what issue you are addressing and which people are affected. Avoid claiming that one concern is universally the largest problem without evidence or a defined basis for comparison.

Consider Benefits and Tradeoffs

Discuss who might benefit, what resources are needed, and what unintended effects could arise. Recognize uncertainty and the information needed to evaluate a proposal.

Explain Your View

Offer a reasoned conclusion that follows from the considerations you discussed. If you draw on personal experience, describe it accurately and do not generalize beyond what it supports.

Practice Constructive Discussion

Ask a partner to challenge your assumptions and practice listening to follow-up questions. Coaching is one possible preparation resource; applicants can also learn through independent reading and practice. Do not pretend to know a fact when you are unsure.
