Medical school requirements vary by institution, application service, and applicant category. Use a school-specific checklist to turn a broad interest in medicine into a realistic application plan.
Verify Academic Eligibility
Check degree expectations, prerequisite courses, lab requirements, acceptable grades, and course recency. Ask the school how it treats community-college, online, international, or repeated coursework when those issues apply.
Check Tests and Their Timing
Confirm which tests are required, score validity, and the latest accepted test date. Use the test provider’s current calendar. A school profile describes past admitted students; it is not a guarantee that a similar score will produce the same result.
Understand Experience Expectations
There is no universal clinical-hour figure that applies to all medical schools. Review published requirements and build meaningful experience that helps you understand patients, healthcare, and your interest in medicine. Record your duties and learning accurately.
Follow Reference Instructions
Read the number and type of letters accepted by each school, including any committee-letter option. Select people who know your work and give them time to prepare. Do not substitute a generic three-to-five-letter rule for the actual instructions.
Coordinate the Application
Track essays, activities, transcripts, references, tests, and supplemental requirements. Confirm whether a deadline concerns submission or completion. Review current information through AAMC’s application resources and each school’s own admissions pages.
