Choosing an Undergraduate Major Before Law School

Choose a major that develops your interests and gives you opportunities to read closely, reason carefully, research, and write. A major’s label does not guarantee law-school admission.

Check Actual Admission Requirements

Review the requirements of the law schools you may apply to using their own websites and the LSAC official guide. Do not assume that one pre-law subject is required across schools.

Develop Relevant Skills

Seek demanding work in analysis, evidence, writing, and discussion. Different disciplines can offer those opportunities. Consider courses that broaden your understanding rather than choosing only what seems easiest to score well in.

Build a Sustainable Academic Plan

Discuss course choices with an adviser and consider your strengths, interests, and workload. Your academic record matters, but a particular GPA and test score do not guarantee admission to a category of schools.

Explore Legal Work

Look for appropriate ways to learn about the profession, such as conversations, observation, or relevant work. Use that exposure to test your interest and develop an informed explanation of your goals.

Preserve Other Options

Consider what you would value about the degree if your plans change. Make an undergraduate choice that supports your learning and practical goals as well as a possible legal career.
