Evaluate a Caribbean medical school through the specific institution, your eligibility, and the career you intend to pursue. Region-wide claims about cost, attrition, or residency outcomes can hide important differences.
Verify Eligibility for Your Intended Career
Check the school’s accreditation, its relevant World Directory information, and the requirements of the country and jurisdiction where you want to train or practice. Confirm how its graduates meet ECFMG requirements if U.S. residency is your goal.
Read Outcomes with the Denominator in View
Ask for recent, clearly defined outcomes: students entering, progressing, graduating, and obtaining residency positions. A match percentage based only on eligible applicants is different from the share of an entering class that eventually reaches residency. Compare like cohorts and years.
Use Official Match Data Carefully
The NRMP’s published reports distinguish applicant groups and Match outcomes. Do not treat a national figure as a guarantee for a particular school or applicant. Ask the school to explain any advertised statistic and provide its source.
Calculate the Full Cost
Request current tuition, fees, living costs, travel, clinical-placement expenses, and refund terms. Confirm financial-aid eligibility with the school and the relevant provider. Model the cost of additional time in school as well as the planned schedule.
Compare Alternatives
Consider whether improving an application for another pathway, changing the school list, or allowing more preparation time would better fit your circumstances. Speak with current students and graduates, and verify claims independently before making a financial commitment.
