Writing a Graduate School Statement of Purpose

A statement of purpose explains the academic or professional direction you want to pursue and your preparation for it. Its content should reflect the degree type and the program’s stated expectations.

Read the Prompt Before Choosing a Structure

Confirm whether the program expects research interests, professional goals, prior preparation, potential supervision, or other topics. Names such as personal statement and statement of purpose are not used identically everywhere.

Explain Your Interests at the Right Level

For a research program, describe the questions and approaches that interest you without promising a conclusion before doing the work. For a professional program, explain relevant skills and goals. Do not force every degree application into a research-proposal format.

Show Relevant Preparation

Discuss coursework, projects, employment, research, or other experiences that prepared you. State your actual contribution and the limits of your role. Explain development rather than listing achievements without context.

Establish Program Fit

Connect verified curriculum, resources, or supervision with your goals where the prompt calls for it. Mention faculty only when relevant and check current work and availability. A list of names alone does not establish fit.

Describe a Thoughtful Direction

Explain what you hope the education will enable you to investigate or do. It is reasonable for plans to develop during study; be clear about your present interests and the questions you want to explore.

Revise to the Actual Requirements

Follow the program’s length and formatting rules. There is no universal page limit. Check facts, citations where needed, school names, and consistency across documents. Make sure any assistance is permitted and that you understand and endorse the final statement.
